Tragedy in Zimbabwe due to the collapse of a gold mine that left at least 6 dead and 15 missing, according to authorities. The collapse occurred in the city of Chegutu, in the north of the country. Rescue teams work around the clock to rescue the rest of the workers. The mine collapsed around 08:00 on Friday, trapping around 34 miners underground, although 13 managed to escape, while 21 remained trapped underground," the ZBC TV (Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation) television network detailed. Of the 21 miners trapped underground, at least 6 of them lost their lives. At the scene, rescue teams are working to find the whereabouts of the remaining workers. "Six bodies could be recovered from the mine this Friday night, while another fifteen miners were still trapped underground and rescue efforts were underway," reported the Europa Press agency. However, the health status of the 15 trapped miners is unknown. "Search and rescue services continue to work to find people whose status is still unknown," said Zimbabwe's Deputy Minister of Mines and Mining Development, Polite Kambamura. This is not the first time that a landslide has occurred in Zimbabwe, but in February 2019, 23 miners died as a result of heavy flooding in the tunnels of two gold mines in the province of Mashonaland West. Likewise, around 40 miners were trapped underground in November 2022, after the collapse of another disused gold mine. That episode took place in the town of Bindura, about 88 kilometers northeast of the capital Harare, in the valley of the Mazowe River, which links Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
